Portage, Indiana is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Portage were French traders and missionaries in the early 1800s. The town was founded by Daniel Boone in 1788 as an overflow from Fort Wayne. In 1802, Ohio General Anthony Wayne attacked and destroyed Fort Dearborn on the river's south side as a warning to other Indian nations not to attack his army during the War of 1812. As a result of this raid, many settlers choice to move west into what is now Harrison County instead of attempting to rebuild at Fort Dearborn following the war. The first store opened in 1802 and by 1830 there were six stores open in portage with a population of 100 people. By 1850 there were twelve stores open with a population of 2,500 people. In 1865, when Morrill’s Land Grant Act was passed giving Iowa land east of the Mississippi River to Illinoisans (the so-called “Iowa Parganas”), some easternIndiana farmers decided they would like their own piece of western Iowa farmland too so they formed a group called the "Portage Township Committee" which lobbied Congress for land grants that would include their township along with present day Harrison County.
