Richmond, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 6,005 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN metropolitan area. The Richmond-Beacon Hill School District serves the town and its three villages: Bedford, Bloomfield, and Short Hills. The first settler in what is now Richmond was James Davenport in 1824. He bought 1/4 acre (0.22 km2) of land from the government for $5 per acre (1/3 per km²). James Davenport named his farm "Richmond". A post office called Richmond was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. In 1837, General David Hunter moved his headquarters to what is now Richmond from Beech Grove on the east side of Indianapolis so that he could better monitor Indian activity in this region. In 1840, John Tolan established a gristmill on the west bank of the Ohio River near present-day Petersburg. In 1845–46 William Henshaw built a sawmill on an arm of river which led to the name "Beacon Hill" given to it by him and others who had toured it while visiting Henshaw's mill at bloomfield Pike near where present-day Short Hills stands today. In 1861–1862 Captain John Wmston fought against Fort Sumter with Major Robert Ellerbe during America's Civil War when both were commandants of Fort Harrison just north of Petersburg across Floyd's Fork from where most contemporary residences stand today including those lining Lynchburg Road running through downtown Richmond today as well as much older buildings located along Herron Street between Third Street and Fourth Street having been built beginning about 1795 by Colonel Nicholas Herron one of southern Indiana’s earliest white settlers according to one source; however other sources listdate these structures began being erected primarily about 1800 or even earlier according to researcher Gary Noland adding they indicate early growth and development around this corner characterizing downtown Petersburg become increasingly developed area very near Lynchburg road intersection especially after Revolutionary War when numerous families relocated hereabouts following戦争終了 which ended British possession over this region sometime prior 1783 also resulting in cessation or termination British military occupation
