Schererville is a small town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Schererville was George Fenton who arrived on May 10, 1824. He and his family built a cabin near present-day Schererville on the banks of the White River. On July 8, 1830, Fenton married Sarah Morelle and settled in what is now Schererville. They had six children: John (1830-1902), James (1832-1900), George W. (1834-1899), Funicella Phebe Aiken (1836-1921), and Martha Jane (Martha Jane) Fenton (born December 12th 1840). On January 17th 1854 Isaac Stephenson moved to Schererville from Canada with his wife Emma and three children: Anna Elizabeth Stephenson Dodge (July 26 1855 – December 25th 1955), John Bancroft Stephenson Jr., and Mary Augusta Stevenson Dodge. He worked as a plumber for many years before coming to Schererville to start his own plumbing business which he operated until his death in 1942 Anna Elizabeth Stephenson Dodge married Eli Page on October 21st 1902; they lived in New Albany until her death in 1984 On November 6th 1907 the village of SchererVILLE received a postcard from America that read "Come visit us soon! We are all well but we have been so busy getting ready for Christmas that we haven't had time to write back." The card featured an image of a tree with the inscription "Welcome Home - our charming little town". The post office continued operations until it closed its doors on March 15th 1912 . Schererville, Indiana was founded in 1836 by Joshua Scherer and his wife, Hannah. The town was named after Scherer's father-in-law, Samuel Scherer, who had settled in the area in 1824. In 1870, the population of Schererville was 1,150; by 1910 it had grown to 3,000. The town became a center for agricultural production and development during the late 19th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, Schererville developed into an industrial center with heavy reliance on aluminum production. By World War II, however, industry had declined and the town almost completely disappeared from the map of America until it reemerged as a small community in recent years.
The Schererville area was first inhabited by the Lenape people in the early 17th century. In 1815, a group of Indiana farmers discovered coal and silver deposits in what is now Schererville. The town was founded on July 1, 1816, by James Scherer and his family. The town quickly grew in popularity due to its natural resources and its location on the Vigo River. In 1907, the town was renamed after General John A. McClernand.
