Shelbyville is a small town in the US state of Indiana. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kosciusko County metropolitan area. The name "Shelbyville" likely comes from an Indian word meaning "place where sweet corn is grown". The first settler in Shelbyville was Isaac Shelby, who arrived in 1837. In 1879, John Fenton built a cotton gin and mill on the banks of the Ohio River in what is now Shelbyville. This became one of America's largest cotton mills until it closed its doors in 1951. The city was founded on December 25, 1896 by J.F. Holland and his brother-in-law Jesse Lantz as a result of land granted to them by General Edwin Ewart Grant for their farm near home on Delaware Street. By 1907, when General Robert Ewell purchased land east of town and laid out streets grid fashion, Dutch elm trees had been planted throughout much of what is now downtown Shelbyville as well as along Third Street (now Courtsey Avenue). A post office was established at this location on February 12, 1897; it continued to function until 1912. In 1911, general Motors Co., which later became GMC Truck & Bus Lines plc., moved its manufacturing operations from Flint Michigan to Bay City Michigan during World War I due to wartime shortages in materials available elsewhere for automotive production. GMC truck plants were also located at Lansing (1915), Orion Heights (1917) and Sterling Heights (1920). After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese military personnel living in the area settled into postwar America and began businesses such as Toyota Motor Manufacturing Inc., also located in Shelbyville absorbing some displaced American workers while their families remain today: Toyota has since increased its workforce by more than 50%. Today within Downtown Shelbyville there are several restaurants including Joe's Pizza Naples which opened in 1978; Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company - once known as Big Red Brewery - opened its doors in 1984; Tommy's Tavernwhich reopened after being closed for years following a fire that destroyed most of its roof; The Steakhouseand both locations have since been replaced by several new restaurants over time including Butchertown BBQ & Beer Garden(2006), High resolution Grille(2007), Golfer’s Inn(2009) and currently One Step Up Gastropubs & Rib Shack(2016). In addition two large shopping malls have become dominant within Downtown Shelbyville: anchored by Sears Canada inside one mall building dating back to 1957 while anchor Macy’s departed from downtown annexation into nearby Goshen Township beginning with 2006 expansions that resulted then-anchor Bloomingdale’s moving out completely across light rail service westward into neighboring Harrison Township concurrent with those stores closure followed by JCPenney Stores closing all 5 store locations vacated between May 2016 through January 2020 creating 7 vacant acres next door voiding 2 blocks adjacent Proctor Plaza both anchors having pulled out leaving little or no retail space remaining adjacent each other creating significant negative environmental impacts even before final demolition commenced total demolition cost $127 million less than half final budget!
