In 1836, Ft Wayne entrepreneur Richard Muhlenberg erected the first frame building in what would become downtown South Bend; it now houses the headquarters of JDS Uniphase Corporation which was founded by John D'Angelo Stewart Sr., son-in-law of JDS founder Joseph Pulitzer Jr.. In 1867, construction began on what would become Notre Dame University; it opened its doors to students in November 1919. Today Notre Dame's campus spans over 9 square miles (22 hectares). In 1915 President Woodrow Wilson announced his plan for American resettlementof Europeans living among them near East Lansing, Michigan; he called upon industrialists and businessmen to donate land here for this purpose – resulting in both the founding of North Park Township (later Noblesville) and then South Bend Township (later Elkhart). In 1508, Giovanni Boccaccio wrote about roasted coffee in De Re Caffeine. By 1600, espresso had been invented by Italian brewers. Coffee started to be served as a drink throughout Italy in the 18th century because it was considered healthier than other alcoholic drinks like wine and beer. By 1800, coffee had spread to England and became popularized there as well. In 1847, French importers brought industrialized methods of production to Brazil where they found growing numbers of slaves working in plantations that processed coffee for export purposes. Coffee soon became one of Brazil’s most important exports and helped build its economy during its golden age of slavery (1850-1912). However, after World War I began and Brazilian troops returned home with little money or resources to invest in their economy, coffee prices fell rapidly and Brazilian farmers lost their jobs; this led to increased rural poverty which further eroded social support for coffee production among peasants. In 1938 businessman Roberto Clemente founded Costa Rican Coffee Company Limited which heralded a new era for Costa Rican coffee growers; however this period also saw many problems caused by economic instability including political violence and deforestation which have continued to affect Costa Rican forests since then
