Speedway is a small town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Kosciusko Metropolitan Statistical Area. Speedway was founded on November 4, 1894 by Wm. H. Bicknell and his brother-in-law Charles Sennett as a horse racing track that served as a racetrack for two years before it became a town. The first post office opened in 1895 and the first township was formed in 1897. The town was named after William Hickman Speed (1839-1915), who had donated land to the town for its development. In 1902, Speedway annexed the adjoining village of Poultney and formed a new township with an estimated population of 2,500 people. In 1907, 3 miles (5 kilometers) of track were added to Speedway making it one of America's largest tracks at that time. Two years later, when race cars became available again after prohibition ended in America, Speedway quickly became one of the most popular venues in America for auto races with more than 350 events taking place there each year. By 1930, Speedway had become an international center for auto racing with participants from all over the world coming to watch races on its large track. The speedway closed its doors for good on May 30th, 1974 due to financial troubles which led to many jobs being lost within the community including many residents working at nearby Moline Motorsports Park which reopened shortly afterwards as an auto dealership and research park with speeds up to . NASCAR hosted their final race at Daytona International Speedway on October 15th/16th 1977 which would be their last event at what would be renamed IndyCar Raceway Laguna Seca Circuit before it closed completely three years later on December 9th 1980 aged 54 years old having hosted over 500 events including 25NASCAR championships
