The St. John Air Force Base gift history dated back to 1948 when the base was activated as a World War II military airfield. The original gift was a hangar and office building which served as the headquarters of the 1st Bombardment Wing. In 1957, the wing was redesignated the 106th Bombardment Wing and in 1966, it became part of the 514th Bombardment Wing when that wing was activated at St. John AFB. The 514thBG is responsible for strategic bombing operations over North America. The 602d Airlift Squadron flewlift supplies throughout Southeast Asia during Operation Rolling Thunder in 1971-1972. In 1993, the wing was again redesignated as 601st Airlift Wing when it moved from its previous location at RAF Fairford, England to St. John AFB. From 1994-1998, 601stAW operated C-141B Globemasters from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida during Operation Deny Flight; these aircraft were used for MEDEVAC missions into Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995 after NATO's intervention there in support of Croatian forces fighting against Serbian aggression In 2003, following attacks on U.S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania by al Qaeda terrorists, Congress mandated that all American airports provide secure screening of passengers arriving from those countries until further notice - an event eventually dubbed 9/11/03 - and decided to give both United Airlines and American Airlines (then American Eagle) responsibility for providing that screening service at their respective airports starting with Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport on September 11th of that year under then President George W Bush's Executive Order 13426 which gave both airlines sixty days to comply with this order or face unspecified penalties including loss of miles points based on past performance). After two years of delay due to technological difficulties (the new security scanners were not able to read certain types of boarding cards), both airlines finally met Congress' requirements on November 10th 2006 when United Airlines installed metal detectors at all airport check points along with hand scanning devices for those boarding without tickets or through carry-on baggage; American Eagle followed suit a few months later (though without metal detectors) while still allowing checked luggage only through check point A1 outside Gate 4A at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport). This led to much criticism from many travelers who felt they had been forced into unfairness by these changes while also increasing fees associated with these additional security measures where previously free checks could still be made through either gate A2 or Gate 3A depending on your departing airline's policy

The next year, America donated two McDonnell Douglas C-7A Coronas to West Germany as part of Operation Paperclip. In 1974, America gifted a pair of Boeing 747s to Europe as part of Project Eagle. In 1981, America gifted two Lockheed L-1011 Starlighters to South Korea as part ofOperation Rainbow. From 1986 until 1992, American gifts totaled $US 38 million ($53 million today).
In 1847, the population of St. John was only 1,500. The town had been founded by Methodists in 1836 as a small community on the banks of the Whitewater River. In 1850, when Indiana became a state, the town was renamed to honor Rev. John Fenton and his missionary work in that state. A Methodist church and school were built in 1852, and until 1954, it was the only religious service conducted in St. John. The business district around Church Street served as the main commercial center for the town for many years; however, this area is now largely empty and derelict. The first post office was established in 1851, and until 1954 there was no mail service to or from St. John. However, during World War II (1939-1945), local residents assisted with sending food rations to soldiers stationed abroad. In 1951, after being passed through several changes of name and ownership throughout its history due to various relocations or mergers among different denominations of Christianity (Mennonite Brethren through 1955; Presbyterian through 1957; Baptist through 1961; Methodist through 1963), St. John finally achieved its current name - reflecting its long history as an independent municipality - when it merged with neighboring townships of Whitefish Lake and Porter Creek to form what is now known as Stephenson County."
The first settler in St. John was James Fenton, who arrived in 1814. The town was founded in 1836 by General George Armstrong Custer and his family. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of coal mines, and by 1840 it had a population of 535 people. It became an incorporated village in 1851, and a city in 1872. The city was destroyed by a fire in 1904, but the ruins were rebuilt and are now known as the Custer State Historic Site.
