On December 1, 1892 the first Coast Guard station in St. John was established by Order of the President James K. Polk with a gift from Mrs. C. S. Lyon (nee White). The present-day Coast Guard Station at 2608 State Road 173 was built in 1951 and dedicated by Rear Admiral Charles W. Halsey, Jr., Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet on November 15th of that year
Pope Saint John the Baptist (John the Baptist) was born in a small town in modern-day Jordan, Illinois on December 6th, 1829. At an early age, he showed signs of being a gifted preacher and evangelist. In 1844, at the height of his popularity as an apostle and prophet, John traveled to India to preach the gospel there. While performing miracles and blessing people with his words, he also experienced persecution from local Hindu authorities. After preaching against religious intolerance in India and denouncing superstition there, John returned to live in Bethlehem on Mount Carmel where he died on March 3rd of that year.
The Coast Guard has been present on the United States coastline for over 180 years. Their mission is to protect and defend our waters, airspace, and coastline. In 1863, when St. John's Parish was established in central Indiana, it was named for the patron saint of that area, John the Baptist. The parish seat at Plainfield was founded in 1854 and remained there until 1869. In that year, a new parish was established east of Plainfield on the village of Greencastle and called St. John's Parish Extension. When Greencastle moved to its present location in 1902, St.John's Parish Extension became part of Greencastle Parish. The name change may have been related to changes taking place in the larger community; by 1865, most residents were Irish Catholics who had emigrated from Ireland. The parish boundaries shifted four times during its history: 1913 (to form part of Terre Haute County), 1926 (to form part of Hammondsville Township), 1951 (to become Ridgeway Township), and 1992 (to become part of Plainfield). St. John's is one of just two parishes withinIndiana that still celebrates Mass on Saturday mornings - the other being Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish south of Indianapolis which changed to All Souls' Anglican Church in 1978 after staying Catholic for over 60 years! 1) On July 1st 1789, Frère Antoine-Jacques Vialier erected an early French church on this site for the French Catholics living along Indy creek as well as Scottish Presbyterians who had settled there since before 1800.
