Fresh roasted coffee has been a part of the St. John, Indiana community for many years. The first beans were ground and roasted by Joe Vallone in 1916. The Vallones sold their beans direct to consumers and continued to roast until the early 1970s when they transitioned to roasting large quantities of Columbian coffee in their Head Quarters factory. In 1984, Mr. Vallone's descendants, the Vallones III, started buying and selling beans direct from farmers throughout the Midwest. Today, fresh roasted coffee is produced by several family-owned businesses in St. John including Joe's Coffee, Mrs. Vallone's Coffee House & Cafe, and Pete's Roastery located off I-465 just north of Decatur on State Road 620. In 1892, a man named John B. Frisch established the first grocery store in St. John, Indiana. The store was located on State Street and became known as the Frisch Store. In 1938, Mr. Frisch passed away and his wife, Mrs. Anna Frisch took over the business and continued to operate it until her death in 1984. From 1938-1984, Mrs. Anna Frisch operated the store under the name of The Annafrich Store. In 1984, Mrs. Anna Frisch's daughter purchased the store from her mother and kept it operating as The Annafrich Store until 1996 when it closed its doors for good due to lack of customers.

In 1814, when the United States became a country, St. John's Parish was one of its first to be established. The parish is named for Saint John the Baptist, who is considered the Patron saint of Indiana. The parish was erected on what is now the corner of East and West Streets in what is now downtown Indianapolis. The earliest settlers here were French Canadians who had come to work on the new land that would become Indianapolis. In 1816, Bishop James Miers called out a detachment of Catholic soldiers from Notre Dame University to help build a road between Fort Wayne and Muncie. The church building construction began in 1819 and it was finished in 1825. It served as the Parish Center until 1907 when it was replaced by the current structure which stands today on North Meridian Street just east of State Fairgrounds Plaza. The old Church has been preserved as part of Indy'shistoric district since 1978. Pope Pius IX visited St. John's Parish in 1870 and pronounced it "fullyCatholic." In 1903, Father Edward Walsh (1859-1940) became pastor after serving as assistant pastor at nearby Cathedral Basilica for six years with great results Thereafter he ledStJohnsParishtoagreatpointofthe 20thcenturyuntil his retirement in 1938 .FatherEdwardWalshhasbeencalledthefatherofIndianaChurchandwasawriteroftheIndiana Constitution..FatherWalshalsohelpedestablishIndy'sFirstCatholicSchoolin1920,. He also organized religious services for military personnel stationed at Ft Harrison during World War I.. On November 5th,, 1938 Pope Pius XII designated Father Edward Walsh an archbishop by awarding him an honorary degree from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service! This event marked an important change not only because Father Walsh had been ordained into office but also because he had previously been associated with both Rome and Washington D.-C.. The first European to set foot in what is now St. John, Indiana was French explorer and missionary Jean Baptiste de la Salle in 1680. La Salle named the area for the apostle John, who had recently died in India. The first Englishman to come to St. John was Captain James Clark on December 12, 1765, when he arrived as part of a group of Americans accompanying General Anthony Wayne during his reconnaissance of the area.
