In anticipation of this designation, plans were made for an enormous new cathedral that would be located on Delaware Street between Meridian Avenue and Washington Boulevard (later renamed Cathedral Parkway). However, World War II intervened and diverted resources from construction until 1951 when another massive building campaign finally achieved results: The current basilica was completed at a cost exceeding $200 million--a watershed moment for Catholicism in Indiana. One reason why St. John's has been so influential is its size: It is one of only two large Gothic cathedrals still standing within United States borders (the other being Westminster Abbey outside London). Its striking architecture has preserved it since its original erection; indeed many people consider it one of America's finest examples of high-style Protestant Gothic architecture dating back to 12th century Europe--an assessment confirmed by architectural historians such as Steven Van Zandt writing about "America's First Cathedral."
