The Marine Corps has been deploying gift history in St. John, Indiana for over seventy years. The tradition began when Marines stationed in the town brought Christmas presents to local families. This continued through World War II and the Korean War before being discontinued in the 1970s. The present-giving tradition re-emerged during the Vietnam War and again during the Iraq War. In 2014, a new Marine Corps campaign was initiated called “Bringing Christmas Home” which encourages Marines to bring holiday cheer to local families. Father Zaccagnini is especially passionate about promoting abstinence from pornography, which he believes can be one way to help prevent sexual abuse from happening. He also emphasizes that people should be honest with each other, and that sex should only be considered as an act of pleasure between two consenting adults. Despite these principles, Father Zaccagnini says there are still some people who feel they need to have sex to feel fulfilled. He tells parishioners that they don't have to let their guard down if they're not ready for marriage or child-rearing, but they should at least avoid having casual sex until they know what they want in life. There's no doubt that Father Zaccagnini has made a big impact on this small town in Indiana - where just over half the population is Catholic - and he's likely to continue doing so for years to come. Thanks to him, everyone here knows how important it is to live according to their own values, even if those values sometimes conflict with those of their church counterparts

The Marine Corps deployed gift history in World War II. The Marine Corps has deployed gift history in every war since WWI, but the first deployment of a gift-based program was during World War II. At that time, Marines received gifts from civilians as well as military members. This event is commonly referred to as "Gift Day."
In 1824, a group of missionaries from the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) arrived in St. John's County, Indiana. They were followed by others soon after and by 1828, a small town had been founded on the banks of the White River at what is now called St. John's Place. The town was named after Saint John the Baptist because he was considered to be a model Christian who converted many people to Christianity during his missionary work in India. The first pastor of Saint John's Church was Rev. James Auld and his congregation worshipped there until 1851 when they moved to Terre Haute, Indiana Territory. By 1853, however, Saint John's Parish had outgrown Terre Haute and it was decided that it would be better to build a new church on an existing site just east of present-day Lafayette Road in Lafayette Township. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on July 17th, 1854 and construction began immediately upon completion two years later. Reverend Auld served for over 60 years before he retired in 1964 and was succeeded by his son Revd Dr Angus Auld who has continued to serve our parish ever since!
In 1811, St. John's parish was organized and erected on the site of present-day Indianapolis. The first pastor was Rev. George Washington Brown. In 1824, a log church was built in what is now downtown Indianapolis as part of a larger effort to provide religious services for the growing city. The first pastor, Rev. Ebenezer Higgins, officiated at this church until his death in 1851. A new log church was built in 1857 and dedicated by Bishop James Hickey of Chicago. Reverend Drury Lovejoy served as the first pastor from 1861 until his death in 1902. A new brick church was built in 1907 at the corner of Meridian and Wabash Avenues and dedicated by Bishop Edward Logue of New York City; it remained Indiana's only brick Church until 1958 when it burned down. St John's Parish also operated a school on State Street near Meridian Avenue from 1889 to 1953; that building has been demolished and replaced by First United Methodist Church (later known as Christ Episcopal Cathedral).
