Pope John Paul II, who was born in the small town of Krakow, Poland on October 8, 1935, came to St. John’s Parish in Indianapolis in 1978 after serving as Archbishop of Warsaw. He designated this parish as his final resting place and ordered the construction of a chapel and an endowment fund for the parish. The third Bishop of Indianapolis, Edward Vaughan blessed the cornerstone for the new church on November 5, 1984. The first service was held in the old rectory on December 6th. On February 21st, 1988, PopeJohnPaulII blessed and dedicated the new church with its present name-St. John’s Catholic Church-in honor of John XXIII who had visited this parish in 1961 and called it “a model parochial community with deep Christian values that has been a source of joy for all who have come to know her” (Czech Bishops' Letter No. 22). The growth of this parish has paralleled that of Indiana itself; during Pope Francis's visit to Indianapolis last year there were over 1 million Catholics living within a radius around Greater Indianapolis than when he left office! In addition to average weekly Mass attendance being at 86%, wonderful works such as meal programs and homeless outreach are being done here every day by local priests and lay people alike! This parish is truly flourishing under Bishop Patrick Doyle's leadership - we're seeing amazing progress both spiritually and economically! We can be proud to call St. John's home!

Pope Francis blessed St. John's Parish in Indianapolis on Sunday, June 24th, 2015. The parish is located on the banks of the White River and was founded in 1881 by Father John Meehan. The current pastor is Rev. Denis Loughlin and the parish has a membership of 4,658 individuals. St.John's Parish was once known as "the little village" because it consisted of only a few homes and churches combined. It wasn't until after World War II that the churchyard became home to many local veterans who had fought in both wars. Today, St.John's Parish continues to serve as a place where people from all walks of life come together for services and fellowship. The first chapel on this site was built in 1881 by Father John Meehan with assistance from members of his congregation at Holy Rosary Convent downriver in Fort Wayne . In 1915,Father John Meehan donated land for the construction of a new church which would be dedicated to Our Lady Helping Hand . The old convent building served as our parish hall until 1978 when it was replaced by our current facility which stands today on the same site As Father John’s Chapel did before it! In 1984, Our Lady’s School opened its doors to students from grades Pre-K through 8th grade In 2001 we added Kindergarten through 3rd grade Then finally 5th through 12th grade followed in 2006 In 2013 we completed renovations and additions to Our Lady’s School which now houses Sacred Heart Middle School with an annex serving grades 1-6 Finally, Blessed Sacrament Parish joined forces with St Johns so that all three parishes could offer one large choir program ( male or female) worshiping at different locations across Indiana ! We are so grateful for this partnership!
The St. John the Baptist Parish was organized on July 21, 1824. The first pastor of the parish was Reverend Wm. Stephenson and he served until his death in 1835. Reverend Jno. Haggerty was elected to serve as pastor from 1835-1839, then Leland Stanford took over and served from 1840-1849 before his death in 1853. In 1859, Rev. Denton Seddon became the first bishop of St. John the Baptist Parish and he served for 26 years until his death in 1906. On October 15, 1907, Bishop Seddon's successor Rev. Coker Aiken installed Revs Samuel Insley (1907-1911) and James Goode (1911-1920). From 1920 to 1932, Revs Milton Ivey (1920-1932) and Harry Fenton were both pastors while Drusilla Peters ministered from 1932 to 1936 before her removal due to health problems. Then Pastor Willard Beaumont officiated from 1936 until his installation on November 3, 1940 which marked the beginning of a new era when Father Beaumont led the parish through World War II with great success!
