St. John's was founded in 1822 by the Rev. John Smith, a Presbyterian minister who moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana. The town was named after Saint John the Baptist, whose feast day is celebrated on July 6th. The first church in St. John's was built in 1824 and dedicated by Bishop James Edward Hickey of Indianapolis. The church has been served by the Reverend J.D. Green since 1865 and by Pastor Rickard Webber since 1997. The Revs Wm Crain and Wm Fenton were ministers at StJohn's from 1937-1950; they are long time residents of the town and have been active in civic affairs as well as giving generously to churches and other organizations throughout their careers. Their retirement brought an end to decades of service at StJohn's with many people looking forward to seeing them again soon! Pastor Rickard Webber became pastor after Revs Wm Crain and Wm Fenton left, serving until his death in 2006 - he had also been a member of the board of directors for more than 20 years prior thereto! In 2007, Pastor Rickard Webber was honored with induction into the Northwest Indiana County Historical Society Hall of Fame!
The first European to visit St. John's Parish in Indiana was Jean Baptiste de la Salle, who came ashore on the ship "Dolphin" on September 4, 1765. He founded the Catholic Missionaries of Saint Patrick at the mouth of the White River in present-day Lafayette, Indiana. La Salle and his group baptized more than 2,000 people in what is now St. John's Parish during their first year of activity. In 1802, French missionaries Father Philippe Bourgeois and Brother Robert Magnan arrived at St. John's from Quebec with a small colony of Jesuits. The brothers began work among the Native Americans living along the White River and soon founded a mission school for youth near present-day Burlington, Indiana. They also built a church and convent nearby. In 1814, an act of Congress granted exclusive rights to religious organizations to build schools within this territory as part of westward expansionism under President James K. Polk’s administration. As result, both Jesuit Brothers – Father Philippe Bourgeois and Brother Robert Magnan – became state trustees for Catholic education within what is now St Joseph’s Parish in Terre Haute, Indiana Territory (now eastern Indiana). At that time there were only about 860 Catholics living in what is now central and easternIndiana; however by 1828 there were over 12,000 Catholics living in these areas due to waves of immigration from Ireland (chiefly through Westphalia High School), Italy (via Mount Carmel College), Spanish America (via Notre Dame University), Canada (via Georgetown University) and other parts of North America during the American Revolution period (see History Of The American Revolution In Northwestern India). Pope Pius IX installed Father Antoine Bourassa as pastor general for all Southwestern France on April 14th, 1846; however after only one year he was succeeded by Father Augustin partnering with Father Bourassa until 1850 when Frère Augustin left for Brazil because he could not get approval from Rome to return home permanently! On November 16th 1893 Pope Leo XIII appointed Bishop Luigi Pacelli “Apostolic Delegate” responsible for spiritual direction throughout the Midwest including those portions lying east or north of Chicago Heights Avenue between State Streets and Cicero Avenue; ultimately responsibility fell back upon Archbishop Mundelein who had been elevated to cardinal by Leo XIII himself less than two months before!
