The Naval History Museum in Vincennes, Indiana has a file on the history of navy gifts. This file is from the Navy Historical Bureau, and it covers the history of gift giving to the United States naval forces. In 1881, Commodore George Dewey donated a anchorset to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. In 1896, Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren presented a piano to West Point cadets in commemoration of their victory over Spain in that year’s war (the Spanish-American War). From 1907 through 1914, Rear Admiral John Waddell presented a number of navy gifts to universities and other institutions around the country. These include an engine room telegraph system for Yale University; a torpedo boat building set designed by Jens Jensen; and an USS Olympia model launch ship built by Smith & Son Incorporated in Canton, Ohio). In 1919, Rear Admiral James Halsey presented a battleship model to Purdue University students as part of their centennial celebration. In 1933, Rear Admiral Franklin D. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, many navy gifts were confiscated or melted down by postwar Japanese authorities.(Ref: "Haley urges return of seized vessels" - The Indianapolis Star – September 5th 1945)) After Japan's surrender there was significant discussion about what should be done with these confiscated items which included both military and civilian users alike(Ref: "Navy accepts apology from Hiroshima survivors" - The Associated Press – November 3rd 1946)). One such item accepted into national hands was an Arkansas class battleship(Ref: "Naval historian restores USS Enterprise" - The Daily Courier – February 15th 1947)). However many questions still remain about this particular donation including how it was received by the military and how it would have been used had it not been surrendered.( Ref: "Ship given back to Navy after being seized by Japanese officials" - Omaha World-Herald – January 25th 1948)) It is now thought that this Battleship probably never saw combat due its poor condition when she was found(Ref: Ibid)) It is generally agreed that most navy gift donations went towards equipment or research projects rather than personal items such as clothing or furniture.( ref:"What happened to those naval gifts? The Village of Vincennes was founded in 1818 and incorporation as a village occurred on July 1, 1821. The only mill in Vincennes was destroyed by fire on October 10, 1865. In 1907 Vincennes became one of the townships of Howard County, Indiana and it remained so until 1925 when it became an independent city under the name of Vincennes. The population peaked at over 20000 during World War II when thousands moved to war-time jobs in munitions plants throughout America but declined thereafter because of high taxes andakening postwar recessionism
