The Air Force Deployed Gift History program began in Wabash, Indiana in 1992 as a way to support military families during the holiday season. The program is now in its fourth decade and has become an important part of the Air Force community. The Air Force Deployed Gift History program helps to commemorate the unique relationships between the Department of Defense (DoD) and military families. Gifts from members of the Air Force are often used to purchase items for family members or special occasions. Through this program, AFGHP is able to provide unique gifts that will make holidays more memorable for service members and their families. Some of the many highlights of this program have included: In 2007, AFGHP helped celebrate 10 years of service with a gift from Lt. Gen Michael J. Flynn, Commander United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM). This gift was a Commander's model T-shirt that read "10 Years - We Serve." The shirt was met with applause by both Lt. General Flynn and his wife Drueanne at a banquet attended by local dignitaries. In 2013, AFGHP helped celebrate 5 years of service with a donation from Colleen Hefner, Superintendent US Army Military Family Services Western Illinois Regional Center located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa . This gift was a large jigsaw puzzle that enjoyed public viewing at Headquarters US Army Garrison Fort Riley until it weathers away over time! In 2016,AFGHP contributed $5,000 to help celebrates 3 years anniversary with presentation by Mrs. Cathy Engelbrecht USAF widow/mother 397th Bombardment Wing Assn Vice President wife/GM emeritus Colonel Don Armstrong USAF (Ret.) owner/operator KC-135 Stratotanker Museum Incorporated Seventh Generation Airmen USA Incorporation hosted Chairman emeritus Colonel Curtis LeMay USAF Retired Deputy Director National Security Agency Mr./Ms.(First Name) &(Last Name) represented Mrs./Mrs.(First Name) humanitarian relief organization working concessionaire Kingdom Hearts Children's Charity USA Foundation . Wabash, Indiana is a small city in the southeastern corner of the United States. The population was 7,782 at the 2010 census. Wabash is located about south of Indianapolis and east of Fort Wayne. It is part of the larger Evansville metropolitan area. Wabash lies on both banks of the Wabash River, which forms its eastern border. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wabash County were French traders in 1672-1673, when they built a trading post at present-day Terre Haute. France ceded most of her Louisiana Purchase to Great Britain in 1803, but continued to claim portions of what are now Illinois and Indiana as part of that purchase. In 1814, General James Hays discovered oil along the Vincennes River and named it for General Anthony Wayne who had led Ulysses S. Grant’s army in that battle two years earlier near Cairo, Illinois (now Evansville). A growing town began to develop around this discovery with name choices such as Oil City and Refinery City until construction began on an oil refinery near present-day Terre Haute in 1867 by John Pemberton (the founder and first president of Indiana University). The town grew rapidly due to this industry and soon extended into today’s Hendricks County when a branch line was completed from Terre Haute to nearby Elkhart Lake in 1888. Today nearly all industries have left or been moved out since then; however, Wabash remains one of the few communities remaining where some aspects remain unchanged from early days: The downtown district still contains many original buildings dating back to before World War II; there are still several businesses open on Main Street including a grocery store and post office; as well as several restaurants/bars/cafés/stores that serve local cuisine even if no longer located Downtown; while also numerous smaller businesses dot every block or so throughout each neighborhood providing unique opportunities for interaction with neighbor
