West Lafayette, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Lafayette County, Indiana, United States. The population was 90,471 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-largest city in Indiana and home to Purdue University and many other cultural attractions. West Lafayette was founded in 1824 as a small outpost on the west bank of the Danube River by Judge Abraham Lincoln. The town grew rapidly during its early years, but suffered from financial difficulties due to low demand for goods produced in nearby Indianapolis. In 1868, author Ambrose Bierce moved to West Lafayette to finish his studies at Purdue University. Bierce is buried there. In 1955, Purdue University built a new campus on land that once belonged to West Lafayette Township. This original campus served as the main educational hub forwest Lafayette until 1966 when it became part of Purdue's larger global network of campuses. Today, west Lafayette remains an important center for research and education in western Indiana and beyond. The downtown area contains numerous businesses and restaurants including several flagship locations of local chains such as Subway (soon to move into a new building), Papa John's Pizza (closed since 2007 after being bought by Del Taco), Dunkin' Donuts (now Dunkin' Donuts Express) and KFC/Chick-fil-A; as well as smaller stores such as ABC News Martand two convenience stores; two churches - First Presbyterian Church which has been around since 1796 and First Baptist Church which opened in 1886 - both with rectory buildings dating back to before Purdue university even existed; three schools - Dunlap High School where Isobelle King was born on October 6th 1865; Stroudsburg Area Junior College - now known as East Central Community College - across Main Street from the high school; one business park containing more than 50 businesses including four anchors: JCPenney(now Sears), Macy's(now Macy's JanSport), Kohl's(now Lowe’s) and Payless Shoes(closed). West Lafayette, Indiana is a town located in the US state of Indiana. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart County town of West Lafayette and is surrounded by Elkhart Township to the north, North Olmsted Township to the east, and Goshen Township to the south. The history of West Lafayette dates back to 1824 when a group of farmers formed a village on land that now comprises much of downtown West Lafayette. The first settler in what would become West Lafayette was Isaac Chappell who moved from Maryland in 1824. By 1830, many other farmers had followed Chappell and established themselves in what would become known as "the Village." In 1830-1831, Methodist missionaries from Ohio came to America and began preaching a gospel of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Reverend John Sibley preached at Horse Creek Baptist Church which soon became home to some 300 Methodists. In 1834-1835 some settlers arrived from Kentucky who were looking for land west of Terre Haute on the Scioto River. After meeting with several local leaders including President James Kountz and Territorial Governor David Logan, they decided that this area should be given to them as part of Indian Territory which was ceded by Mexico following its independence from Spain in 1821. In 1840-1841 some more settlers arrived from Kentucky who were looking for land between Terre Haute and Danville on tributaries of the river below Evansville (now Indianapolis). The new arrivals decided that this area should be given to them as part of Ft Wayne Territory which was organized into counties by General William Henry Harrison during his presidency in 1846-1847. After surveying all available lands within present day Elkhart County, General Halleck chose sections 3 & 4 (west side OF current Main Street) along Wabash River as site for Fort Hamilton/West Lafayette or "New Albany" as it was called then since most people thought it would be named after New York's capital city (Albany). On July 1st, 1848 while still an unorganized territory under Harrison's administration, Ft Wayne changed its name to Northwest Territory when it merged withIndian Territory created by territorial legislature on March 14th that year under pressure from US Congress following Fur Trade Treaty negotiations with Great Britain On November 15th 1870 passenger trainloads carrying passengers en route from Chicago disembarking at Evansville Normal Train Station pulled up alongside original fortifications just north and east of today's intersection OF First Avenue NW & Old National Road NW - these remain extant Japanese World War II era bomb shelter remnants visible inside former mass transit depot built over remains today
