The name changed to Zionsville on December 1, 1838, when President James K. Polk designated it as seat of DeKalb County following its formation from parts of Anderson and Benton counties. Zionsville is one of several small towns near Indianapolis that were among those affected by Prohibition in 1920-21; during this time period many businesses closed because alcohol could not be bought without a license or sold without government permission (see prohibition). Zionsville is a city in and the county seat of McLean County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,663 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1827 by farmers from Kentucky who were seeking to find a new home after fleeing the American Civil War. Zionsville is located on the banks of the White River and close to three national forests: The Lord's Resistance Army-affected area is within Zionsville proper, while other forested areas include parts of Logansport and Bloomington. The first settlers in what would become Zionsville arrived in 1827 when John Saylor, his family and others moved from Kentucky to start a farm on what would become known as Saylor's Run. By 1830, some 50 families had settled here including Captain James Bledsoe who ran an unsuccessful trade ship called the "Belfast" before purchasing land around what is now downtown Zionsville from David Hartsfield. Over time, many other farmers followed suit until there were over 100 people living in or near downtown Zionsville by 1840. During this time period, several businesses thrived such as Denton & Company merchants who operated gristsmills and sawmills; Gadsden warehouse and flour mill; Mrs. Gibson's bakery which became one of McLean County’s most popular attractions; local physician Drury’s office; Methodist Episcopal church built in 1836 (replacing an earlier building); local school (grades 1-8); post office established on December 17th 1837 with Purdy as its first mail carrier In 1851, following Brown v Booth ruling that slavery was unconstitutional throughout all of America, Mclean County decided to secede from Indiana and form its own state called Kansas which included much of present-day Illinois In 1861 during America’s Civil War efforts to keep slavery off southern states’ ballots due to their anti-Union stance – Zionsville voted for Confederate General Robert E. Lee On July 12th 1861 10 male citizens of town petitioned then Mayor John Witherspoon for approval to open arms against Union forces under Confederate command under the name “the defenders of Zion” motivated by religious beliefs With large majorities both inside City Hall voting yes along with property owners nearby it quickly gained notoriety statewide among pro-Southern residents even going so far as providing arms and munitions for Southern soldiers during battle days leading up to secession proceedings however only 2 men were arrested resultant in Mayor Witherspoon issuing a public apology later that year For all these years prior no mention has been made about this important event except for occasional mentions online dating back to at least 2006 or 2007 when photos popped up online purporting to be oldavaliant home movies taken during early 1860s moments leading up To The Secession Of Kansas
