Zionsville is a small town in Union County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by Postmaster General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy as a stop on their route between Vincennes and Danville. The first post office was established in 1817. The name "Zionsville" derived from thetownsite's location near the home of Benjamin Ziegler, who had named his farm after his father-in-law Zalman Szekely (sometimes spelled Szakely). In 1821, Ziegler sold land to Wm. Ransom & Bros., merchants from Lebanon, for $1,000 ($ when measured against current prices). Zionsville became an important transportation center during its early years because it served as both a stop for wagons coming down the road from Lebanon and also a landing spot for boats going upriver to take passengers to Lafayette or Fort Wayne. A stagecoach depot was built here in 1825; later this depot evolved into what is now known as First National Bank of Zionsville. In 1840, when Indian Removal began under President Andrew Jackson, many residents of Vincennes left to cross overland to Kansas Territory through Iowa Territory; these people were referred to as "the Great Migration." One group of Zionsvillians chose instead to stay and build a community called Zion Station on land that they purchased from John Warner Sr., one of the leaders of the Great Migration. After tribal hostilities ended in 1846 and white settlers began moving into Indian Territory following that year's treaty signings at Big Timber Springs northeast of Vincennes - including some who had come from Zionsville - most everyone within easy driving distance turned out for what would become known as "the Great Sioux Revolt." On October 10thuphemized as "The Battle of White Cloud", around 5500 Indians led by Sitting Bull attacked several thousand whites at Gentry Prairie south of present day Fenton Road/Upper Arlington Cemetery while supplies were being unloaded onto wagons outside Niles Arsenal; although outnumbered and vastly outgunned (-5:1), today's historians believe that Native American forces nonetheless inflicted significant casualties on their opponents before succumbing to an overwhelming defeat just inside present day Union Township limits about two miles northwestward along Upperville Road/OldUpper Arlington Cemetery boundary line... skirmishes continued until late November 1863 when allotted lands east of Cedar Creek were opened up for settlement... about 2200 people comprising mostly Hennepin Creek Sioux moved into new towns designated by commissioners appointed with advice from state legislators.... Most settlements closed within one year or two because there were no permanent resident families among those seeking entry.. By 1860 only 350 people remained in Zion Station; 150 lived there permanently and 100 came transiently during that decade... By 1870 only 25 people remained in Zion Station; all but three lived there permanently... In 1900 only six people remain living here permanently... After World War I most residents relocated back into Zion Station except for one family which moved out during Prohibition period.; Today remnants remaining consist largely Of old buildings erected circa 1920s And 1930s Along With A Few New Homes
