The Bettendorf Army Post Office was established in 1868. The post office is named for General James K. Richardson, the first commander of the Iowa Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. In 1907, Bettendorf became a consolidated city and it was then that the city began to gift military items to its citizens. In 1915, the army began giving civilian residents of Bettendorf military items as part of their Victory Day celebration. Now every year on July 4th, the city celebrates this anniversary by giving out small arms and other weaponry to civilians in attendance. In addition to Victory Day festivities, Bettendorf also hosts a parade through downtown each year called "The Armory Show." This event features local businesses exhibiting their latest weapons and armor products to tens of thousands of spectators who attend from all over Des Moines metropolitan area.

Bettendorf is a town in Iowa, United States. It is part of the Bettendorf-Davenport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,551 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf was platted on December 10, 1855 by Capt. John M. Deering and named for David C. Bettendorf, a land speculator and member of the first board of directors of the Des Moines & Western Railroad. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the newly formed Dakota Territory during the 1860s and 1870s, when new railroads were built through that area. In 1875, it became one of several towns in Iowa to receive a post office after being reestablished as a city by an act of the state legislature; Bettendorf had been Perry County's only incorporated settlement until then. By 1908, it had become home to one of Iowa's largest cotton fields and also developed into a thriving agricultural community with small businesses and large families farming corn, beans, wheat, soybeans, peas and other crops; however World War I interrupted this growth and caused some declines in farm production during later years. Bettendorf, Iowa is a small city located in the southern corner of Iowa. The city was founded in 1847 by Luther Bettendorf and his family. Bettendorf is the third-oldest continuously inhabited town in Iowa. The population of Bettendorf was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The history of Bettendorf begins with Luther Bettendorf who settled in what is now Bettendorf, Iowa, in 1847. At that time, it was part of the Dakota Territory and there was no law or government to protect settlers from Indian attacks. However, Luther’s wife Anna helped establish a town hall and store on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1851, when German immigrants started arriving to settle in Iowa, they began calling their new community “Bettendorf†after their old home on the near-by German village of Bettinberge (now Beloit). Luther died in 1857 and his widow continued to run the townhall and store until her death in 1865. The next year, she married James Wilkinson (1827-1909), an American fur trader who had moved to this area from St Louis County, Missouri some years earlier. James also owned land within walking distance of the new townhall and store so he played an important role in its growth over the years. In 1898, JamesWilkinson donated land along North First Street for a school which served as one of two schools within appellation Pettigrew County until 1902 when it became part of Des Moines Public Schools system In 1912–13 during World War I., local men volunteered for military service; many worked at night while others were away at war camps or working on farm animals After World War I ended there was much discussion about returning home; however most people chose to stay and continue farming In 1924–25 local men organized a road construction project which became known as “The Great White Way†In 1927 local men formed a constabulary which later became known as “Bettendorfen police departmentâ€
