The history of the Iowa Army National Guard begins with the state's admission to the United States in 1846. The first regiment, mustered into service on November 1, 1846, was known as the 2nd Battalion of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On October 12, 1850, a 3rd Battalion of Iowa Volunteers was organized and assigned to Fort Dodge. From 1861-1865, the 2nd battalion served in Missouri and Arkansas; from 1865-1867 it was stationed at Osceola Barracks near Des Moines. On January 6, 1898,Iowa's National Guard unit became part of the newly created 26th United States Infantry Division under General George Custer during World War I. In 1917-1918 this division fought in Europe as part of the Allied Expeditionary Force (AEF). In 1919-1920 it served in America's participation in World War II as part of Ninth United States Infantry Division (9UISD) commanded by General Omar Bradley. From May 1940 until December 1945 9UISD was stationed at Camp Polk near Savannah Georgia while awaiting shipment overseas to fight in Second World War when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in American military forces being called back home. The brigade returned home on December 51945 and disbanded on January 15 1946 having taken no casualties during its stay overseas.
Waukee is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Waukee County and is located in the eastern part of the state. It lies on the Wabash River. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Waukee were French-Canadian trappers and traders who came through this area in 1824. They named their new village "Noyon". In 1827, they founded a fur trading post on the banks of the river near present day Waukee. The post was abandoned around 1830 when gold was discovered nearby. A small community grew up around this post but it never attained much notoriety until after World War II when it became center of an agricultural region that included parts of Des Moines and Iowa City. In 1847, local farmers formed a company to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) south of present day Waukee from Jacob Sully for $1 per acre (4 million francs). This land would become known as "Davenport Prairie" because General James Davenport purchased it from Daniel Boone for $21 per acre (8 million francs). Davenport started farming here in1849 and began developing his farm into one of the largest corn and wheat farms in America by 1860. In 1865, he donated 4,000 acres (14 km²) to Des Moines University which would grow into one of Americas most respected universities – today UIUC ranks among top 20 U.S. universities by enrollment size/rankings and has been called The College That America Forged: rising stars at top colleges across all disciplines research & teach together at more than 100 campuses nationwide
The army gift history goes back to the Revolutionary War. Soldiers and civilians alike would often give gifts to one another in order to show appreciation or friendship. There were many different types of gifts from people who loved the military. From what we can tell, the first military gift was a Bible. This was given as an act of kindness and appreciation to a soldier in need. The next type of gift was a rifle. This gave someone the opportunity to fight for their country and protect their friends and family. As time passed, more and more gifts were given in order to show how much someone cared about their regiment or unit. Some of these gifts included clothes, equipment, food, or even money! It is clear that love and appreciation were important factors during this period of history. Gifts kept coming in until after World War II when soldiers no longer received such thoughtful gestures from civilians. With all that has happened since then, it is interesting to think about what might have been if those early gifters had not died in service or been forgotten entirely!

Waukee is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It lies in the eastern edge of Polk County and is bordered by Clearwater to the north and east, Dodge City to the south and west, and Waterloo to the northwest. Waukee is named after Isaac Waukee who settled there in 1845. The first school in what is now Waukee was built on land that later became known as Creek Park. In 1853, James Irvine built a gristmill on the creek near what is now Main Street. In 1865, Orville Kneeland erected a store and post office here. The first church in Waukee was built in 1880 by Reverend John Aitken. That same year saw the founding of the American Legion Post #1 which remains active today. The first school building burned down in 1903 but was replaced with a new one soon afterwards. In 1907-08, an experimental farm was established here for use by students at Iowa State University (now UI) titled "Iowa Experiment Station". This farm has remained operational ever since as part of campus agriculture programs unchanged by recent changes within UI! In 1919-20, Jens Rasmussen began buying farmland hereabouts and dividing it into 21 lots; these were home to his family until they left for their property near Cedar Rapids when he took over that business too! He also founded Rasmussen's grocery store on First Avenue NE which continues operation even today – still providing reliable groceries at an affordable price for residents of this vibrant community! Rasmussen’s heirs continue to operate both businesses together until today! In 1951-52 when Waukee had its first firehouse (later converted into a town hall), Mr. Rasmussen donated all twelve acres surrounding it for municipal purposes – making this our present day Civic Center! Today we enjoy many cultural events throughout each year including our annual Fourth of July fireworks display from 8pm - 10pm CDT!!
