By 1925, the population had shrunk to 602 people and Great Bend was merged with Leavenworth into the City of Leavenworth. By 1920, Great Bend had become a prosperous small commercial community with several stores, restaurants, a bank, and a doctor. The population increased slowly until World War II when it peaked at 2200 people. At war’s end, most of the residents left Great Bend for other locations in Kansas or Nebraska because of economic reasons. After the war ended, many new residents came to Little Big Horn but some old timers stayed to keep their homes and businesses operating until they were destroyed by fire in 1978. Today there are only a few remaining buildings from when Great Bender was thriving including two churches dating back to 1907 and one post office which still operates today (although its hours have changed). One thing that has not changed much over time is its popularity among tourists who come to see its beautiful architecture and well-preserved historic resources such as churches and shops dating back to 1854
