Ashland is a city in and the county seat of Ashland County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 15,309 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Ashland County and one of its three municipalities. The first permanent white settler in what is now Ashland was James White on land grant from Colonel John Sevier in 1814. The town started as a trading post on the Ohio River near present-day Lebanon, Indiana. In 1825, Rev. Isaac Asbury founded the Baptist Church in what is now downtown Ashland and served as its first pastor. A cotton gin was built by Elijah Hunt around 1830 to process local cotton; it became known as "the Oldtown Ginn" because it operated until 1865. In 1845, Daniel Boone came through this area while hunting with Andrew Jackson and named his new settlement after himself – "Boone's Ferry". This name stuck and Ashley Falls (now part of downtown) was developed nearby because water could be brought to it from nearby ravines by wagonloads during the winter months. Ashley soon became an important stop for stage coaches travelling between Cincinnati and Louisville along I-65/US 36W (later I-465). In 1860, when Cumberland County was created from parts of Kentucky east of the Allegheny Mountains, Ashley became its county seat; but due to problems with malaria control within Ashleyvillage specifically, that position eventually went to Lebanon in 1870. In 1881, Ashevillage annexed neighbouring towns of Lebanon and Sheffield; these annexation were effective January 1st following a referendum conducted by citizens of those towns over whether they should have become part of Ashevillage or remain separate municipalities under their respective mayors' administrations alone (though all three municipalities continued to function as unified cities).
