The history of the Campbellsville Army Depot began in 1882 when Colonel James H. Campbell, Jr. donated land near what is now downtown Campbellsville to the military for use as a Soldier's Home. The first Soldier's Home was built on the current site of the Maryvale Shopping Center in 1886. In 1903, Campbellsville acquired its present location on State Street just south of town. The depot opened its doors to soldiers and civilians on October 1, 1904. Campbellsville is a small town in Bourbon County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bourbon County. Campbellsville was founded by Richard Campbell in 1827 and incorporated as a city in 1868. The first settler in what is now Campbellsville was James Hinchcliffe, who arrived in 1798 from England. He built the first cabin on the current site of Campbellsville about 1800. Other early settlers were John McConnell and his brother-in-law David Rankin, who had come overland from Scotland in 1799. In 1811, John Rankin married Anna Hamilton and they established a farm around present day Alexander Lane where they raised corn, beans, and horses until their death in 1830. In 1827, Richard Campbell purchased land east ofpresent day downtown Campbellsville from David Rankin for $1 per acre (nearly three dollars today). He named his new settlement after his father-in-law's birthplace near Edinburgh – Banffshire (nowBanffshire County). In 1870, when Kentucky became a state, Campbellsville became its capital with the erection of the state capitol building on Fourth Street south of High Street. That same year saw also the opening of Union Pacific Railroad's line between Louisville and Nashville through Bourbon County; this railroad would later become part of Interstate 5 and be known as "the Loop" because it circles back to Louisville many times. By 1880 there were only 400 residents living within city limits while an additional 2200 lived northeast on what is now Alexander Lane outside city limits; these people included farmers and their families who farmed until 1935 when electric lights were installed throughout most areas including Campbellsville effective July 1st 1925 according to Oral History researcher Donnie Baskerville On December 7th 1888 local businessman Elijah Wood bought 3/4 mile (0 kilometer) northward along present day Alexander Lane from James McAlester for $10 per acre ($2 worth today). This purchase put much attention on developments aroundpresent day Alexander Lane due to woodcutting operations which began shortly thereafter by teamsters using horse power to clearcut logs that had been lying idle for years during bad weather conditions having resulted from lack of available transportation along main river valleys then connected by deep ravines with intervening woods which often hindered traffic movement making it difficult to get supplies into or out especially during winter months .
