On November 3, 1870, Louisville & Nashville Railroad completed a line through Campbellsville making it an incorporated city with its own police department and fire department On March 14, 1911 the Pittsburg-Cincinnati Railway (later the Pennsylvania Central) built a branch line south from Hopkinsville via Campbellsville to Frankfort Junction where it connected with the Louisville & Nashville Railroad In 1916 businessman John Denny donated land for what would become University Park which opened in 1924

Campbellsville, Kentucky is a small town in far western Kentucky that was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in the early 1800s. The community grew quickly due to its location on the banks of the Ohio River and its natural resources, which made it an important food source for the area. Campbellsville became a major center of trade and commerce in the region and developed into a bedroom community for Louisville. The town's history begins with Richard Campbell, who arrived in 1792 from County Antrim, Scotland. He built a cabin near what is now downtown Campbellsville and started trading goods with local Native American tribes. In 1824, Mr. Campbell married Maria Swindlehurst and moved his family to this new location. The couple had five children: John (1825-1912), Andrew (1827-1900), Sarah (1829-1893), James (1831-1915) and Ella (1834-1945). John Flanders was born in 1825 in Campbellsville and took up farming after leaving school to help support his father and brothers. By 1854, he had become one of the wealthiest men in eastern Kentucky due to his ownership of several hundred acres of land around Campbellsville. He donated this land to build what is now Hillcrest Cemetery; it remains one of the most populous cemeteries in Kentucky today. Flanders also served as mayor of Campbellsville from 1895 until 1899; during this time, he helped create much of the town's infrastructure including streets, schools and fire stations.
