Covington, Kentucky is a small town located in Pike County, Kentucky. The population was 6,821 at the 2010 census. Covington is the county seat of Pike County. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette metropolitan area and the 35th largest city in Kentucky by population. The town was founded in 1802 by John Wilkinson and his family, who were pioneers in what would become Pike County. The name "Covington" comes from the Welsh word for "a place where people fish." After Wilkinson's death in 1814, his children inherited his land and continued to farm it until they sold it to a group of investors led by William Fenton in 1828. They named their new company Covington & Hardin Bank. In 1876, Covington became an independent city and adopted its own government with a Mayor/Council form of government which it remains today. In 1907, the first airmail service between Lexington and Cincinnati was started with mail delivered by train from Covington to Lexington via Hamilton House on Main Street. The U.S. Air Force has a rich air force history that goes back to World War I. The service was created in 1907 as the Aeronautical Board, and during the 1920s it became the Aeronautical Division of the Department of War. In 1947, when World War II began, the AAF was redesignated as an independent military service, and in 1949 it became the USAF. The USAF is one of five armed services within the United States federal government. It is responsible for providing aerial warfare assistance to its allies and conducting international operations such as Operation Allied Force against Iraq in 1991 and Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1991. The RAF's contribution to air warfare came about with their development of flying boats in 1885-1892 which were used by both sides during World War 1. However, while they did play a significant role in modern air warfare during WW1, their ability to carry heavy bombloads made them unsuitable for use against enemy targets at short range or in close combat situations where bullets could kill pilots easily. This changed when German Airlines Flight Lieutenant Meinhof developed his Me 262 jet fighter bomber which could fly at high altitudes and engage targets at long ranges without being shot down (thus making it possible for strategic bombers to destroy these aircraft). The RAF responded by developing their own jet fighters which eventually became known as "Eagle" type aircraft from 1941 onwards due to their large size compared with other fighter types available at that time such as Mustangs (the USAAF's primary fighter arm) and Hurricanes (the RAF's main ground attack arm). These jets were able to successfully operate against Nazi Germany's Tiger tanks on numerous occasions throughout WWII!
