In 1863, the United States Army was deployed in Kentucky. The army's 1st Infantry Regiment was ordered to provide security for a trainload of Confederate soldiers traveling from Memphis, Tennessee, to fight in the Union army. As they were passing through Covington, the regiment's commander, General James Moncrief, saw an opportunity to purchase some items for his regiment's use. He purchased two barrels of powder and a bag of bullets from a local grocer. Since then, General Moncrief has been credited with being one of the earliest owners of military-issued gifts. His purchase served as the genesis for what is now known as the "General Moncrief Award." The award is given out yearly to someone who has made a significant donation to their local community or charity.

Covington, Kentucky is a small town in the state of Kentucky, about 25 miles south of downtown Louisville. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grayson County. The first European to settle Covington was Nicholas Vining who arrived in 1790 and erected a cabin on what is now known as Old Mill Road. A post office called Viningville was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1825. In 1828, John Letcher purchased land east of present-day Covington from Nicholas Vining. He developed this land into an agricultural community with homes, churches, schools and businesses. In 1840, James Ketchum settled near present-day Covington and built his plantation on what are now Eighth Street and Old Mill Road. This development became one of the largest slave plantations in Kentucky during that time period. Ketchum's slaves worked on his farm until 1863 when he sold them to General David Hunter for $10 million dollars ($ today). General Hunter used these slaves to help build other plantations throughout Kentucky including ones near Fort Gibson and Bardstown. In 1865, following the American Civil War, most enslaved African Americans were freed by Union troops under General Robert Ewell Sykes into nearby Hardyston County (now Jefferson County) where they began to reestablish themselves as farmers and citizens after years of being forced into servitude under Confederate soldiers at Tullahoma Landing near Knoxville Tennessee

In 1941, Japan sends 30000 Japanese citizens traveling across America as part ofOperation Midshipman which helps bring food and supplies to its allies during World War II. These people were known as « favorite among friends » by many Americans because they spent so much time with the Japanese people before their departure and returned safely back home after several months in America! This gesture was seen as an incredibly thoughtful gesture by Japan and remains one of America’s most popular military deployment gifts today

Covington, Kentucky was founded in 1802 by Captain James Wilkinson. The city was named for the Christian Parish of Covington, Kentucky which had been established in 1792. The population of Covington increased from 7 to 100 by 1820 and it became a town under the jurisdiction of Frankfort-Langston County. In 1838, the county seat moved from Frankfort to Covington, and in 1865 it became an independent city. By 1900, the population had reached 1,500 and it became a state capital in 1912. In 1938,KY literacy rates were among the highest in America at 90%. From 1959 until its annexation into Louisville by metropolitan Louisville in 1970, Covington served as a suburb of downtown Louisville. With its growing economy and popular nightlife options, Covington has become one of the most vibrant cities within Louisville metropolitan area.
In 1829, the area that is now Covington was part of the Kentucky Reservation. The land lay between Louisville and Nashville on one side and Lexington on the other. The reserve was created by President James K. Polk in 1828 as a way to provide for Native American tribes in the area. In 1850, Covington became a town within the reservation.
