A group of men from Covington donated 1,000 pounds of rice to the Union army. This donation helped to feed and clothe the troops in battle. The following year, 1863, another gift was given from Covington residents. A group of men from Covington donated $10 worth of clothing to the Union army. This donation allowed soldiers to wear clothes that were not practical for combat conditions.
Covington is a small town in the eastern portion of Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. Covington is one of the few remaining "Original Settlers" in Jefferson County and has been home to many pioneer families for over three hundred years. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Covington were two Swiss miners, Engelbert and Matthias Bachmann, who came ashore on a small island near present-day Georgetown on November 10, 1679. They named their new settlement after the then prospering city of Venice, Italy; their ship had stopped at that port on its way back from a mine strike in Germany. In 1795, John Overstreet purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of the Limestone River from David Nance and built a log cabin known as Overstreet's Grove on it. He also started another house about one mile (1 km) away from his original cabin which still stands today as Overstreet's House Museum. In 1805–1806 surveyor Samuel Owens surveyed much of eastern Jefferson County and selected those portions now including what is today Covington as being open country suitable for habitation by white men only. His map shows that he established two villages there: Overstreet's Village and Guttenberg's Settlement (later renamed Netherland). These village surveys were made without knowledge or consent of residents living nearby who were then forced to sell land they did not own to developers for payment for access to water rights or other valuable resources that would later make them prosperous towns like Cincinnati and Louisville. It wasn't until 1827 when Judge James Murchison furnished transportation for four white men appointed by President James Ketchum to survey lands between Logstown Creek northward along present day Route 66 and Clarksville eastward along present day Route 725 that settlers began moving into this undeveloped area constituting what would eventually become Covington proper. From their original location around three miles southwest corner of Broad Ripple Road/Route 64 & Old US 25 just north-northwest corner across Main Street Cemetery towards Georgetown/Fenton Road they gradually expanded outward towards where Fountaintowncurrently standspadding around 400 acres within single family homes with gardens behind screens each&gave names some still remain such as Kingfisher DriveEagle Ford Rd., Stillwater Rd., White Sands Dr., Green Gables Dr., etc.) Today these streets are well known throughout our community & many still reside there including Mrs Johnnie Barber’s family who resided on Kingfisher Drive until her death in 1984virtually everyone born after 1800 has their roots here especially in downtown core+ nearly every post office south side also served descendants here long ago
