The first coffee beans were roasted on a small farm in Covington, Kentucky in 1847. The early pioneers who founded the town of Covington began grinding and roasting their own coffee in 1853. The first commercial roasters arrived in 1862, when two French immigrants named Nicolas-Jacques Demarest and Louis Pasteur opened the first French Coffee House on Fourth Street.
Covington is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Covington were Quakers from Philadelphia who arrived in 1781. The town was named for Captain John Covington, leader of an expedition to find a new route to Ohio through the Appalachian Mountains. In 1802, General James K. Polk established Fort Donelson on the ruins of an earlier Indian fort in what is now downtown Covington. In 1808, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down Fort Donelson and took away everything valuable within its walls except for some cannons and cannons' crews who escaped to safety on horseback. The event known as "The Burn" helped solidify Covington's reputation as one of America's most important strategic communities during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After the war ended, much of what had been taken from Fort Donelson was sold off or used by local farmers as livestock depots until it was all destroyed by a fire in 1922 when a new cotton gin was built near present day Broadway Street and Elm Street. What remained of the old fort became home to another concentration camp called Majestic Park which operated from 1942-1945 during World War II under orders from then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his plan to put more civilians into camps while they were still vulnerable to potential abuse - only this time POWs were being held instead of enemy combatants! Nowadays you can see evidence that Majestic Park ever existed including two large concrete blocks that once served as gates; also note two huge tree stumps which are still standing today near where Broadway Street meets Elm Street! Today there is also a small open field next door to Presbyterian Church which used to be housing for farm animals but has since been filled with grass and built over with a parking lot! However, one good thing about all this destruction etc...is that you can often spot several items that have never been disturbed such as rare window glass or evenchips! So overall it seems like things have always been changing around here...but interestingly enough, nothing really has changed too much over time!!!
