The area that is now Covington was first settled by English colonists in the late 1700s. In 1865, Coffee moved his family from Covington to Louisville so that he could avoid military service under Abraham Lincoln’s new government

In 1831, a large brick courthouse and jail were built in downtown Covington by contractor George Stephenson. The courthouse served as the village's main meeting place until it burned down in 1859. The jail also served as a prison from 1861-1865 when Kentucky abolished slavery. It is now known as "The Old Jail" and is open for visitors during business hours only
