Covington, Kentucky is a small city located in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The population was 5,582 at the 2010 census. Covington is the county seat of Jefferson County. In 1802 John Covington donated land for a Presbyterian church which later became known as First Baptist Church (now First United Methodist). In 1883 voters passed a resolution designating Coventry asthe capital of Hardin County; however this designation did not become effective until 1905 when Hardin Countywas organized into three counties -Jefferson (including Covington), Stark and Fayette -and Coventry lost its status as capital because no county office could be located thereabouts. The first commercial enterprise outside of agriculture based in Covington was established in 1865 when Prentiss Bros., grocery stores began stocking groceries brought overland from Louisville via Paducah Junction Railroad Station on account of high prices charged by local retailers for goods bought elsewhere or delivered by boat or wagon from larger cities such as Cincinnati or Nashville. In 1870 Prentiss Bros.'s second store opened at 111 S Broadway which soon became known as "The Donelson House" due to its prominence within that section of town during those years for social events associated with Generals Donelson and Henderson among others In 1888 Prentiss Bros.'s son-in-law Wm Henson began selling ice cream out front his father's business until 1903 when he moved into his own store which remains open today called The Ice Cream Shop at 111 N Broadway
