The Bullocks were determined to bring the best coffee possible to their customers. They built their first shop on the corner of Sixth and Elm Streets in 1925. TheBullocks continued to offer high-quality coffee until they sold it all in 1961. The origins of today’s gourmet coffee industry can be traced back even earlier than that. In 1839, two Dutchmen called Cornelius Brouwer and Hendrik Steen bought a small plantation near Georgetown, Kentucky, for $1,500. They started growing coffee beans and selling them wholesale to local grocery stores. Some time later, they decided to open a café – which is where the term “gourmet” originated!
