The first Europeans to visit Erlanger were French settlers in 1792 and 1793. A log cabin was built by John White in 1814 and became the nucleus of what would become Erlanger.
A post office called Erlangen was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1886.
In 1865, J. Baily erected a new church on the site of his old one; this building still stands as a local landmark.
On July 9, 1870, Baptists founded an African Methodist Episcopal Zion congregation here with Wm Hargrave as its first pastor.
The community had quickly come to be known for its bourbon whiskey production industry which commenced shortly after that date (Erlanger Distillery being founded in 1871).
The town's nickname came from nearby Mount Lebanon which "looks like an Armstrong" due to its many peaks visible from downtown Erlangen during summertime sunsets.
By 1880, when Prohibition began nationally effective January 1st that year, all but one distillery had closed down including Erlangen Distillery although some continued product distribution until 1923 when prohibition ended completely nationwide. The last distillery reopened on October 14th 1993 by founder’s grandson Chris Green who continues operations today.

Erlanger is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,272 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The name for Erlanger comes from Old French erlat - meaning "to wander."
The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders and missionaries in the17th century. A post office called Erlanger was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1870.
In 1881, a group of entrepreneurs led by W S McNiven started trading gas and coal near present-day downtown Erlanger. In 1886 they built a mill here which continued to produce flour and other goods until 1907 when it closed down due to competition from more efficient mills south of the border.
In 1907, Johnnie Cochran (later nicknamed "the King" because of his successful boxing career) set up shop here as a grocery store/motel for truckers on the then new paved road between Louisville and Nashville. Cochran's business thrived until its closure in 1951 after he lost interest in driving long distances for groceries or visiting family back home during those tough times during the Korean War.
In 1951, one of Erlangers longest lasting businesses opened when U S Steel built a plant here to produce high-quality steel products for export. After several years of protests by residents over noise levels from the plant, steelworkers moved out en masse before permanently shutting down operations in 1979 following disclosures about health risks associated with working with hot metals at that time.
One other resident-owned business - Midwestern Cement Company - operated successfully until 1986 when it too went out of business due to environmental concerns around production processes used at that time including using slag left over after mining operations finished.- In 1991 local artist Donny Osmond set up shop here tattooing locals who would come into town for services done at his studio scattered around various public areas within walking distance like Main Street Station #2., old power Plant across from High School & Depot Square), Pawnbroker Square), GAS STATION (near present day Walmart), etc.) while artists/ musicians lived and worked indoors like David Bowie (& Janis Joplin) or Tom Petty (& Elizabeth Woolridge Petty).
The town of Erlanger was founded in 1812 by the brothers James and David Erlanger. The town flourished for a time, but quickly lost its population due to the lack of available land. In 1847, the town was abandoned when the railroad reached it.
