The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Unit (MCDGFU) is responsible for the disposition ofDeployed gifts. The unit was established in 1984 and provides a means for Marines to show their appreciation for service by delivering gifts to family, friends, or other military members. The MCDGFU’s primary responsibility is the management and disposition of donated items. Items that are not needed or cannot be used within the Marine Corps are usually disposed of through normal Waste Management procedures. It is theUnit’s policy to ship all donations in original packaging with any necessary documentation including shipping labels. Since its inception, the MCDGFU has transported over 12,000 gifts from Marines and their families across Kentucky. The Unit has also received numerous awards recognizing its efforts including being selected as one of “TopGiving Organizations” by charities magazine in 2006 and 2007.

Erlanger is a small town located in Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 3,796 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Hardin County and one of the most rural. Erlanger developed around a gristmill which operated from 1859 to 1865. The mill left behind a number of buildings, including a Methodist church and jail. In 1907, Erlanger got its first electric light system and soon after its first store opened. In 1916, Erlanger had its first schoolhouse and also became home to the first post office in Hardin County. Today, there are few remaining physical reminders of what occurred during the early days of Erlanger’s growth but it has perpetuated its name as an important community in Kentucky history.
The Erlanger area was first settled by the Kentucky Colonization Society in 1809. The society, which aimed to create a new native-born American population in Kentucky, purchased land from the Cherokee and other Native Americans. In 1815, the group erected a small cabin on what is now Main Street in Erlanger and began to build a larger community. The first Post Office was established in 1816, and by 1830, Erlanger had a population of about 50 people. In 1829, the town was renamed for General James Fenton (1786-1850), who had played an important role in America's advance during the Mexican-American War and as commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army at Vicksburg. A year later, Fenton's son, John Fenton (1801-1868), became mayor ofErlanger. During the 1930s and 1940s, Erlanger experienced significant growth as a result of its importance as an airfield for World War II aircraft production. In 1944, the airfield was renamed Wright Field; it has been used ever since for various research purposes including missile testing and space exploration. Today, Erlanger is home to several business districts - one of which includes several factories that produce high technology products such as electronics and smartphones - while also containing a number of restaurants and nightlife establishments catering to both locals and tourists alike.
