The Air Force has a long and proud history in Florence, Kentucky. The first USAF base here was at Wright-Patterson AFB in 1946. And today, the USAF operates three wings here - the 6th Wing, the 7th Wing, and the 8th Wing. In addition to its bases in Florence and Bowling Green, the USAF also maintains installations at Fort Knox and Whiteman AFB in Missouri. In 2013, it was announced that Joint Base Andrews would be home to one of America's newest airfields - Project Atlas - which will house Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets. Florence, Kentucky is a city in Robertson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 15,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Florence was American Revolutionary War general Ira Deane on July 7, 1776. He named the town for his hometown of Florence, Italy. During the American Civil War, General George McClellan's army passed through Florence on their retreat from Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Confederate General Robert Ewing's division passed through town that day as well and it was said that "the bells jingled like shrapnel" as they went by. On November 11th 1881 a tornado touched down in Florence and caused extensive damage to buildings and homes including an entire block of downtown business district which collapsed into the basement of one building; $2 million worth of damage was done to property within a 10-mile radius of where the tornado struck.

Florence, Kentucky is a town located in Johnson County, Kentucky. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It was originally a log cabin community established by James C. Robertson on the banks of the then-fertile river valley in 1839. The original settlers were made up of part-time farmers and their families who eked out a living by raising livestock, fishing and hunting. By 1860, Florence had grown to become an agricultural center with over 30 businesses operating in its downtown area. In 1881, Florence became the county seat of Johnson County after being chosen by popular vote from among six candidates submitted for the position. The city of Florence began to grow rapidly after it was selected as the site for what would later be known as Louisville’s new airport in 1930. As air travel became more prevalent throughout America, businesses and citizens alike decided that Florence would be an ideal location for their growing operations. In 1949, the original courthouse building was completed and renamed “Robertson Hall” in honor of its first settler and namesake. Today, Robertson Hall continues to serve as one of Florence’s most iconic landmarks – hosting events such as county fairs and local music festivals throughout the year! In recent years, much progress has been made towards restoring and preserving aspects of Florentine history including its rich cultural heritage which dating back centuries ago! One such project initiated by residents is called “FlorentineFest” which features art exhibitions, music concerts and historical exhibits all within walking distance of each other! Florence was founded in 1792 by the merger of two small settlements, West Point and Easton. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River and its easy access to markets. In 1814, the United States Congress created a new state out of part of Virginia, named Kentucky, and Florence became the capital of that state. The city continued to grow as a result of business opportunities available from its location on the river and from its close proximity to other larger towns in central Kentucky. By 1870, Florence had become one of the largest cities in Kentucky with a population over 100,000.
