Florence, Kentucky is a city in Spencer County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spencer County. The name of the city comes from Florence of Italy who was born there in 1799. The first known settler in what is now Florence was David Ladd who built a log cabin on the present day site of downtown Florence on November 3, 1827. The city was founded by General James Hays when he arrived in 1828 as part of his efforts to drive out Native Americans from what is today Spencer County. Hays named his new settlements after French explorers and notable citizens of Europe who had explored and settled in that region- including Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1768-1842), Nicolas Boudreau (1789-1851), Jean Baptiste Carpentier (1796-1863), Jacques Marquette (1684-1765), and Pierre Dorion (1762-1837). Hays built a small fortification called Fort Hays which served as the town's first courthouse and jail until it burned down in 1834. A new courthouse was erected near what is now First National Bank building on State Street in 1850 and served as the town's main business district until it burning down also in 1850. Founded by James Hays, this brick building located east of downtown currently houses the Spencer County Courthouse Annex. In 1865, General Jubal Early established an encampment for Confederate soldiers called Camp Morton which stood on current day White Park Avenue between Knox and Market Streets across from City Hall before being moved to its current location just northeast of Downtown Florence two years later when General Early's camp became known as Winchester Junction. In 1881, whenorge Thomas began operations at Musgrove factory producing agricultural products such as flour, feedgrains, cheese, eggs etc., he decided to move into north central Kentucky where he had earlier been operating a flour mill at Paducah but found no corn or other suitable resources available to him so he abandoned Musgrove shortly thereafter due to lack of success with his enterprise.. This left Florence without commercial acreage for many years until John Denny & Sons began production at their Denny Silos southwest of downtown about 1915 resulting in increased population growth for what would become one of America's largest industrial cities with over twenty corporate headquarters located within its limits during its heyday from 1925 through 1945 inclusive! Today however very little remains above ground except for some remains associated with Local 815 Teamsters Local Union No 015B AFLC
