When Union forces withdrew from Vicksburg in April 1865 following their victory over Confederate President Jefferson Davis' army at Appomattox Court House—a event which has been called one of history's most dramatic reversals—Bunning moved his headquarters back east to Frankfort where he remained until his death in 1911. During World War II much activity took place here including production by Convair Consolidated turbojet plants at nearby Kelly Air Force Base; manufacture by Wernher Hogg Aircraft Corporation at Huffman Arsenal; assembly by Ford Motor Company at Bowling Green Assembly Plant; aircraft manufacturing by Douglas Aircraft Company at Independence Airport; research and development by North American Aviation Laboratories here at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (later renamed Rand Corporation); etc.; however most production ceased soon after Pearl Harbor because war ended with Japan’s surrender).
