This makes coffee different from other drinks such as tea or water because it contains more caffeine than either of those beverages can generally handle without having too much effect on the user’s alertness or performance. Glasgow, Kentucky was founded by James Robertson in 1785. At the time, it was one of the most important settlements in Kentucky. In 1801, Scottish settlers petitioned for independence from Great Britain and formed a government called the Provisional Government of Scotland. The following year, Glasgow voted to secede from Kentucky and became an independent republic. Glasgow grew quickly due to its location on the Cumberland River and its access to transportation and trade routes. By 1800, it had a population of about 1,500 people. In 1802, General Robert Ewell invaded Kentucky with a force of 10,000 men and drove the Scots out of their settlement. This event is often cited as the beginning of the American Civil War. The Battle of Glasgow was fought on October 15, 1802, duringthe war against General Robert Ewell. Ewell's forces were attempting to cross the Cumberland River into Kentucky when they were met by Robertson's militia led by Captain John Sparrows. The Scots attackers killed many of Ewell's troops before withdrawing back across the river without capture or injury to themselves or their horses. This victory helped convince United States President George Washington that secession was necessary for America's defense against British aggression. The Glasgow, Kentucky town of Glasgow was founded in 1824 by James and Rachelle Dunlap. The Dunlap family became the owners of a large tract of land around the present-day city of Glasgow. In 1831, the Dunlap family donated land to build a school for their children. The first school in Glasgow was built on what is now Second Avenue. From 1870 through 1890, processions from various churches led to First Presbyterian Church services at noon each day on Fifth Street between Highland Drive and Springvale Road (now Third Avenue).
