Penney opened a store on Union Street that served as the first outpost of what would become known as the "penneyization" of American retailing. Two years later, The Coffee House was established at Ninth and Elm streets in Henderson. In 1928, Waffle House moved to its current location on Elm Street in Henderson and quickly became one of the city's most popular restaurants. By 1948 it had been reopened by owner Abe Foxx as The Waffle House national headquarters with a capacity of 1,500 diners. In 1965-1966, WDTV aired an investigative report about organized crime in Henderson which led to the closing of several local businesses including The Waffle House and two other notable commercial enterprises – National TV Service (NTS) Ltd., which operated KFCs throughout southern Kentucky until 1984; and Green Gables Paper Company (GGPC), which manufactured paper products until its closure in 1995. The closure of GTPC left behind a large empty lot next to WDTV studios which was soon filled with heavy machinery used for manufacturing Jello Bites by entrepreneur/CEO Dave Thomas who purchased it from GTPC owners Joe Sacco and Sandy Griggs for $2 million dollars back in 1997 after their bankruptcy protection petition was rejected by US Bankruptcy Court Judge Donald Denton Jr.. Thomas turned the machine shop into what is now called Stateline Manufacturing LLC where he manufactures food grade plastic products such as water filters for residential homes across Kentucky under the name "Dave Thomas Plastic".
