Henderson, Kentucky is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of central Kentucky. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. The area around Henderson has been inhabited by the same people for more than 1100 years. The first European to visit Henderson was James Tipton, an American Revolutionary War general and surveyor who mapped much of what is now Kentucky. The first permanent settler in Henderson was Elias Boone, who founded a cabin on the side of a mountain in 1799. By 1820, there were twenty-one families living in Henderson and it had a population of just over 100. In 1824, John Clements built his house on State Road 7 near present day downtown Henderson. This was the first post office in Henderson and served as its center until 1835 when the first store opened up on Main Street. During the Civil War, many men from Henderson enlisted in Confederate army units such as 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment under General Jubal Early; 10th Infantry Regiment under Colonel William Taney; 4th Kentuckiana Infantry Regiment under General Braxton Bragg; 2nd Tennessee Mounted Volunteers under Colonel Forrest Smith; and Union Colored Troops commanded by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Some residents also volunteered to fight for both sides and some remain today registered with one or both armies because they fought outside their home county during this time period. In 1865, Union forces destroyed most of what remained of Confederate General Robert Easley's brigade at Big Sandy Creek Bridge northeast of town after he surrendered at Appomattox Court House (now Lexington). Many men from Henderson lost their lives during that battle including Captains John Fenton (1st Battalion) and Israel Ives (3rd Battalion), Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Strong (4thKentucky Infantry Regiment), Sergeant First Class Levi Coffin (2nd Battalion) and Private First Class David Hogg (7th Kentucky Infantry Regiment). After the war ended, most men from Henderson returned home but some managed to find new homes elsewhere within Kentucky or North Carolina where they lived until eligible for naturalization following Reconstruction which began in 1868. Today, there are still few direct descendants remaining from those early settlers but many people are descended through marriage between local native Kentshire natives and other Americans or Europeans who immigrated to KY during that time period either directly or indirectly including: David Rockefeller Sr., father of Standard Oil heir Rexford Rockefeller; Edward "Ted" Kennedy Sr.; Jimmy Carter’s grandfather Vernon Carter Jr.; Driscoll Sisson III president & CEO Trinity Care Health System & CEO/CFO McCoy Brownstein represented various industries throughout eastern KY prior to being elected as Mayor of Louisville KY in 2016; current Mayor Greg Fischer is grandson-in-law to late Rear Admiral James Doolittle Jr.. Henderson is located at 40 degrees 33 minutes north latitude along with all other towns within Johnson County east thereof lying below said parallel line thence northerly unto State Line then easterly theretoowing Belt road named Clearwell Pike thence westerly along said belt road until it touches upon said River Clinch then follows said riverClinch southwesterly untill it comes into possessionofaid watercourse called Beaver Run flowing out aforesaid river into French Broad River
