The Hopkinsville Regional Airport was home to the United States Air Force's (USAF) 1st Bombardment Wing from 1947 until its closure in 1991. The wing was activated on 8 December 1947 at RAF Bentwaters, England and moved to the new Hopkinsville Municipal Airport on 21 January 1948. It later absorbed the former Whitley County Airport. The wing served as a heavy bomber force for strategic bombardment of Nazi Germany during World War II, primarily operating Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters and Kawasaki Ki-54A Apaches. After the war, it transitioned to Boeing B-29 Superfortresses inactivated on 15 May 1949. The wing assumed control of McDonnell Douglas DC-3 passenger jets and Boeing 707 daylight travel aircraft which were deployed as part of NATO's "Vietnam War" air campaign against North Vietnam. Inactivated units also operated Lockheed L-188J Electrajets from 1972 to 1974. Inactivation followed the end of USAF combat operations in Southeast Asia in 1973. Its last operational Avro RJ25 Globemaster III flew on 18 September 1981 when it was withdrawn from service at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska and placed into storage there until its retirement eight years later.

Hopkinsville is a town in Bullitt County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first known settlement in Hopkinsville was on the hill overlooking the town center that was named for Judge William Hopkins (1786-1855). The first post office in Hopkinsville was established on February 20, 1827. In 1832, Colonel John Cranch donated land to build a school and store within theTown limits. A log courthouse and jail were built soon afterwards and served as town hall until it burned down in 1865. A new courthouse was designed by localbuilder Jno. Prentice and completed in 1867. "In 1831", General James Ketchum wrote "A plan has been made to erect a frame building to house a jail which will answer the purpose of an court House & jail within this place." A stagecoach stop called "Hopkin's Station" served as transportation for goods between Cincinnati and Hopkinsville from about 1840 until about 1860 when railroads came into operation. The first white settler in what is now Hopkinsville was James Witherspoon who arrived with his family from Virginia in 1800. He founded a small farm near present day Third Street and Court Avenue which he named Vail Forge after his father-in-law Nicholas Vail (1768-1846). Witherspoon sold his property east of Third Street to Elijah Parishon around 1830 for $5 per acre including water rights; this location becamepresent day Fourth Street downhill from Court Avenue Preston donated another parcel of land southeast of Third Street to create what is now FifthStreet shortly before his death in 1850s . This parcel also becamepresent day SixthStreet below Court Avenue . Reverend Samuel Morse boughtthe westernmost lot on Fifth Street between Court avenueand Vinegar Hill Road around 1830 for $10/acre - this areabecame Present Day SeventhStreet below Main Street . Reverend Morse had plans to builda flour mill there but never got started due to financial difficulties . However, later residents acquired some adjoining parcels intothe early 19th century which led to the establishment of present day EighthStreet just north of Main street . In 1887, Drury erected a brick church on Church Lane adjacentto what is now Second Circle Drive ; this parishioner also funded almshouses on First Circle Drive acrossfrom Main Street
