The first documented mention of maga coffee was in 1827 when a German traveler named Johann Georg Gottlieb Von der Heyden mentioned the drink in his journal. In 1825, the town of Paducah began importing maga beans from Turkey. As the demand for Turkish-grown coffee increased, so did the amount of beans that was being roasted in Hopkinsville. By 1830, maga coffee had become a well-known export commodity in Kentucky.

Hopkinsville, Kentucky is a small town located in southeastern Kentucky, about 20 miles northeast of Louisville. The population was 5,837 at the 2010 census. The Hopkinsville-Fayette County School District serves the town. The first settlers in what is now Hopkinsville were farmers and their families who arrived around 1800. In 1814, Colonel Pemberton founded the College of Kentucky in what is today Hopkinsville. In 1822, General Andrew Jackson built a house here as his headquarters during the Mexican–American War. In 1829, President James K. Polk sent General John Covington to purchase land for the construction of a courthouse and school in Hopkinsville. Construction began on this project in 1830 and finished in 1832. The original courthouse was replaced by another structure in 1907 and remains extant today as part of the University of Louisville campus complex. Hopkinsville's rich history includes significant contributions from many notable people including: Jethro Gibbs (the founder of Gentry Bank), Nathan Bedford Forrest (a Confederate general who served as Governor of Tennessee and Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant), Reva Seibert (founder and first president of Women’s Christian Temperance Union) and Drayton McLennan (founder and first president of Johns Hopkins University). Today, HopkinsVILLE continues to be an important community with strong ties to its farming heritage as well as its educational institutions which are home to some world-renowned scientists such as Drayton McLennan and Jay Cooke Jr..

After World War II, Hopkinsville experienced a decline in its economy, but has since resumed its growth as an agricultural center.
