Hopkinsville is a town in Morgan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,596 at the 2010 census. Hopkinsville was founded in 1837 by General James H. Johnston and named for Rear Admiral George C. Hopkins. It is the home of US Congressman Andy Harris. Manufacturing began to take hold in the early 21st century as local companies such as American Electric Power and Belknap Chemical Company developed plants there. The current high school was built in 1959 and opened to students in 1962; it is one of two high schools within Hopkinsville city limits (the other being Lebanon High School). The old high school building served as both a municipal hall and law enforcement training academy until it burned down in 2003; restoration work on that building began that year and it reopened to students in 2005. The new high school was completed in 2016, making Hopkinsville one of only three cities or towns in Kentucky with two public schools having newly constructed buildings (the others are Louisville Metro Schools' Central Campus and Lexington's King's College Prep). The popularity of Cognac led to a rise in demand for freshjava beans which soon became unavailable due to continued deforestation throughout much of Southeast Asia – making it difficult for farmers to produce quality beans without sacrificing land or income. As a result, many European brewers turned to Africa (where Java now makes up a significant percentage of the population) for their supply of high-quality Arabic-grownJava Beans! Hopkinsville was a small, farming town in Lawrence County, Kentucky until the early 1800s. The town was founded by John Hopkins and his family in 1798. During its early years, Hopkinsville was a stagecoach stop on the route between Cincinnati and Louisville. The Hopkinsvilles were pioneers in the land industry and built several large farms around Hopkinsville. In 1820, John Hopkins died and his son-in-law James Fenton purchased his father's farm from him. Fenton renamed the farm "Fenton's Station" in honor of his father-in-law. After several years of growth, Fenton's Station became too busy for him to manage and he sold it to Jno Hamer in 1828. This gave birth to what is now known as "Hamertown". In 1827, Ebenezer Horton opened a hotel called The Hermitage at what is now downtown Hopkinsville. It became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town because of its comfortable rooms and good food. In 1830, Hutchinson Witherspoon bought Witherspoon's Brewery from Ebenezer Horton for $1,000 cash! Witherspoon soon startedproducingKentucky liquor which made Hopkinsville famous throughout the United States! In 1840, when Kentucky statehood was achieved, Hamertown voted to become its own county! This event marked an important milestone for local government in Hopkinsville. The first post office in Hopkinsville was established on December 12th, 1831 by James Fenton with the name "Fentonstown". On January 1st, 1839intonumberonepostofficeopened underthenewname"Hopkinsvilletown". Afterseveral extensionsandchangesoftheaddressduetoconflictwithresidentialroperties nearby(now Downtown),theold Postal Office reopened on July 15th1859underthenewnameofHopkinstownParksAndRecreationDepartment."
