The town became a cotton plantation until it was abandoned in the late 1800s. The current site of Jeffersontown was first settled by European Americans in the early 1800s. In 1814, General James Jefferys founded the town of Jeffersontown after purchasing land from the Cherokee nation. The town became a cotton plantation until it was abandoned in the late 1800s. The original settlers of Jeffersontown were Englishmen who came to Kentucky during the early 1800s to be farmers and traders. By 1814, many English people had moved to Kentucky and began developing farms around present-day Jefferson City and other nearby towns. One of these English settlers, John Cockerill, purchased 640 acres (2 km2) of land at what is nowJeffersontown from the Cherokee nation for $220 total cost. Cockerill named his new settlement “Jefferson City†after President James Ketchum Jefferson (1802-1865). When Kentucky became an American state in 1792, landowner’s rights ceased to exist within Kentucky as part of this process known as “the admission into that Union which our fathers striven so hard for[.]†This change removed most Native American residents from their ancestral lands across eastern Kentucky including those living near present-day Jefferson City and other surrounding towns. As a result, many Creek natives relocated eastward from their traditional territory along with several thousand Jamaican slaves who also left their plantations during this period for various reasons including political unrest or economic opportunity on newly acquired land outside British Columbia where they had been working since before independence arrived on July 1st, 1776!
