Jeffersontown is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky, located near the intersection of Interstate 65 and U.S. Routes 421 and 424. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It was founded by farmers in 1814 as part of the Jefferson Purchase from Native Americans, who named it for General James Jefferys, commander of American forces during the French and Indian War. Jeffersontown is one of two original towns in Hardin County (the other being Lebanon). In 1830, it became a post office with its own ZIP code. In 1881, it became an incorporated town; when Jeffrey Weed purchased land there in 1907, he changed its name to Jeffersontown after his father-in-law's family name Hughey. The first store in Jeffersontown was built on what is now Main Street in 1814 by Andrew Jackson Richardson and Cornelius Humphreys; it operated until about 1840 when local farmers started selling goods out of their homes instead. By 1851, there were six stores in Jeffersontown with a total population of about 150 people; by 1900, that number had grown to more than 350 people. When settlers arrived in this area during the early 1800s they did not know how to farm so they Started using hoes to till their soil which caused huge hole wherenow stands building today called "The Hoe Shop." There are also reports that some farms produced over 100 bushels per acre but due to lack irrigation technology those yields were never realized because water could only be brought into the field through pumps which then watered other crops while the farmer’s hands were fully occupied with haymaking or cultivating potatoes etc... And also another report says that lots stood empty for years because no one wanted to get involved with farming since it was such an expensive venture In addition most men worked on government jobs like magistrates or justices Jefferson bought 640 acres near present day Louisville from David Woodhouse (citizen) on December 3rd 1796 for $10 per acre . Original title: “To form a new township within this county for certain persons Jabez Muhlenberg and Isaac Richberger†The first settler(s) named were: Jacob McMillin (1), John McMillin (2), James Richardson(3), Ebenezer Richardson(4). On January 5th 1800 Elijah White made survey of lot 7 & 8 NW corner Of Lot 5 & 6 Block 2 Inverted Triangle—this lot lay vaguely upon surveyed land being Purchased From David Woodhouse Dec 3d 1796! This triangle formed what we now call Third Street! James Richardson marked off lots 1-3 Nov 22nd 1800 2nd Survey Roll #101 Now known as 4thStreet!!! Lots 4-7 been surveyed & recorded Aug 9th 1800 By order o’ Govt.—Richberger , Jabez Muhlenberg! Map dated Jun 14th 1798 shows two lots remaining undeveloped 10 blocks south along Third Street then east towards Louisville!!
