Lexington, Kentucky is a city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the seat of Clark County. The population was 158,828 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County metropolitan area. Lexington was founded on April 12, 1775, by frontiersman Andrew Jackson and his group of settlers along with about 140 other pioneers at what is now known as Pioneer Square. In 1801, General Robert E. Lee's army destroyed an internal enemy encampment in Lexington and this event became known as "the Battle of Lexington". The city had a population growth rate greater than 10% each from 1800 to 1850; however, it averaged only 1%. However, between 1850 and 1880 it grew 5%, 9%, and 11%. From 1880 to 1910 its growth slowed but then increased 6%. However again between 1910 and 1920 it decreased by 2%. During World War II the city saw an increase in population due to fuel shortages caused by wartime production. The post-war boom brought new businesses such as Home Depot and Sears Roebuck to town; however, many factories closed during economic decline in the late 1990s accompanying grunting recession that hit most regions in Indiana/Kentucky hardest.
In 1801, the first Kentucky state Constitution was ratified. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Lexington became the capital of Kentucky and served as a key battlefield. The city was also home to many famous politicians and people who worked in government including Abraham Lincoln and James Buchanan.
