The history of Lexington, Kentucky can be traced back to the early 1800s. The land that today makes up Lexington was first inhabited by the Cherokee people. In 1792, John Adams and his wife Abigail were married in what is now downtown Lexington. After their marriage, they moved to Lexington and started a family. In 1802, the United States Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which led to the displacement of many Native Americans from their homes in Kentucky. The Indians in Kentucky were forced to move westward and many became refugees in what is now Texas. When it came time for these displaced Native Americans to re-establish themselves in new locations, some chose to move into what is now northeast Kentucky instead of trying to return home. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and he announced his intention to expel all Federalists from Tennessee including those living in Kentucky. This caused a great deal of tension between Jackson and Governor James Kenton Sr. (whose son James Kenton Jr.) because both men believed that this expulsion would lead to more free black people moving into eastern Tennessee rather than western Kentucky where they belonged. As a result, violence broke out between the two groups soon after Jackson's inauguration. After several months of skirmishes and combat, Jackson withdrew his forces from Tennessee without implementing his plan for removing all Federalists from that state as planned. This action earned him national rebuke but also helped solidify his reputation as a successful general who could handle difficult situations.
