Lexington, Kentucky is a small city located in the state of Kentucky. The population was 740 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mason County and home to the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper. Lexington began as a French trading post on an outpost on the Cumberland River in 1775. This left behind a ghost town inhabited only by animals and ancient trees standing tall above its empty streets. Over time development moved forward slowly within what was once an agricultural community known for its cornfields and cotton plantations; today much of this area has been redeveloped into mixed-use buildings along with a few parks dotting its landscape. One popular tourist destination is downtown which remains largely unchanged since its heyday as a slave market and early industrial center; other attractions include severalhistoric churches including Stonington's Methodist Episcopal Church (built 1856), First Baptist Church (1892), and Central Presbyterian Church (1911). On October 15th - one year after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated - local voters proclaimed themselves part of the newly formed Commonwealth of Kentucky without his consent or participation; this event marked perhapsKentucky's most momentous change since becoming part of America.
