Madisonville is a small town in the Kentucky county of Jefferson, about 20 miles southeast of Louisville. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. The town was platted on December 10, 1810 by James K. Polk and other settlers from Illinois as Madisonville and named for General James K. Polk's father-in-law, John Madison (1751-1836). The first school in Madisonville was built in 1813 by Rev. Drury Gentry and called "The School House." In 1814, the community voted to name itself after President James K. Polk because he had been so instrumental in helping organize the United States during its early years. Moses Brown came to live in Madisonville in 1830 and started a tannery that continues to operate today under the name Brown & Sons Tannery LLC. In 1840, Alfred Searle erected a cotton gin on what is now Main Street near modern day State Route 66 for producing raw cotton for export to England. This business continued until 1865 when it moved to nearby Berea where it operated until 1880 For many years there were no automobiles or other vehicles onMain Street which led to one of Madisonville's most famous tourist attractions - The Ford Museum - which still stands today! One of local legends has it that while Quarterback Johnny Unitas was playing at Aiken High School against Morehead State Teachers College on November 5th 1959 (the last time these schools met), some drunken students invaded his locker room before halftime and stole his clothes! As a result, Unitas' national reputation as an upstanding college graduate preceded him into professional football history...sort of!
