The history of the navy gift in Mount Washington, Kentucky begins with the opening of the first store in 1876. The store was run by Mrs. G.W. Hatton and her husband, Dr. Tom Hatton, who were also officers in the army during the Civil War. They had been stationed at Fort Knox when they opened their store. From that time on, Navy gifts became a popular item for military personnel and their families across the United States. The first naval gift shop was located on Third Street in downtown Mount Washington where it operated until 1898 when it moved to First Avenue North near Lexington Market due to restrictions placed on merchant businesses by Mayor James Biddle Sr. The shop was open from 9am to 6pm six days a week and it served as a hangout for soldiers and their families before and after military drills which took place every day around town outside of the shops windows. Naval gifts continued to be popular among American civilians until World War II when they shifted focus towards Axis forces during that war’s conflict (See below). Polk sent a squadron of warships up the river to support General Andrew Jackson's army in the Battle of New Orleans. On December 12, 1817, Commodore James K. Polk's squadron blockaded Mobile Bay and destroyed a French battery that was firing on American ships offshore. This victory marked an important achievement for the navy and helped bring about United States victory in the War of 1812

In total, there are likely countless other interesting navy gift stories that could be mentioned but for this article we will focus on just three specific examples: the USS Constitution (the first U.S. Navy Ship), HMS Victory, and HMS Sutherland. The USS Constitution was originally donated to the United States Navy by James Kapp as part of his donations to the country after his victory in the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1776. The ship had previously been used by British forces during the American Revolution and had been damaged beyond repair at that point so it was decided that it would be better if it were donated to America instead. The Constitution was eventually delivered to America on October 26th, 1787 under Captain John Fidas with assistance from Governor Thomas Hutchinson of New York City. It was initially equipped with 10 cannons however due to its donation from Kapp only 8 were actually installed onboard when it arrived in America - one cannon per side! The ship also boasted an impressive crew of around 450 officers and men who managed to successfully fight against British forces throughout its journey here though eventual destruction occurred while being refitted at Norfolk Naval Yard in 1865-3! It is now preserved within King’s Lynn Historic District located within Norfolk County Virginia towed back home following its restoration in 1984-5! HMS Victory was another donation from James Kapp which came about as a result of his victory at Bunker Hill which took place on April 19th 1775 near Boston Harbor! This vessel had originally belonged to French forces who had surrendered after the battle however upon inspection they found that her hull was severely damage which led them to donate her back to France rather than allow her ultimate destruction like the Constitution did! She later served with distinction during both World Wars before being decommissioned in 1945 and sold for scrap two years later! Today she can still be seen moored off Tilbury Docks near London England where she currently remains open for visitors! HMS Sutherland also originated from a donation from James Kapp which took place shortly after he won his battle at Bunker Hill! The ship had originally belonged to Prince George’s Own Royal Corps of Foot which had surrendered after fighting alongside British forces during what became known as ‘The War Of 1812’ however upon inspection they found that she too needed extensive repairs so she was donated back along with three other warships including HMS Oxfordshire (later renamed HMAS Melbourne) and HMAS Cerberus (later renamed HMAS Perth). These vessels joined together forming what is now known as ‘The Squadron’ which participated actively in both World Wars before finally disbanding due largelyto lack of funding over time!! Today she can still be seen moored off Sydney Australia undergoing repainting today!!
