The Murray, Kentucky Army National Guard was organized on July 1, 1861. The unit was called to active duty on September 24, 1861 and served as part of the Kentucky uniformed forces in the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered into service on October 12, 1861 and fought in the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. On November 12, 1862, the unit participated in the Battle of Perryville where it lost three officers and thirty-six enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. On December 16, 1862, the regiment participated in the Battle of Stones River where it lost two officers and twenty-eight enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. In March 1863, General Robert E. Lee ordered all Confederate armies to unite under his command so that he could better prosecute his war against United States forces. As a result of this order Confederate units were reorganized into divisions which became corpsarlies which were then redesignated as infantry brigades with no cavalry attached.
